Cannabis 101: Concentrates

Stoners get a bad wrap. So many people think that they are flakey nerdowells. Well let me tell you something, I’ve used used cannabis several times a week, sometimes every day, for almost ten years.

That’s serious commitment.

Finally, someone has taken note of my steadfast dedication; LOCAL'd has asked me to answer a few of their customer’s frequently asked questions from the perspective of a longtime stoner, medical marijuana patient and LOCAL’d customer (since the very beginning).

A lot of people have been calling in and asking about the oil cartridges that Local’d gifts. From what I’ve heard, it sounds like there’s a lot of you who want to know about the effects of vaping with an oil pen cartridges vs. smoking the traditional way (with flower and combustion). So here it goes:

First, it’s important to note that cannabis vape pens can be divided into three categories based on what kind of material you’re putting into them: flower, wax, or concentrate cartridges. When it comes to ease of use, portability, and functionality, one cannabis product stands out against the rest: preloaded cannabis oil vape cartridges. (For the purposes of this article, I’ll only be referring to concentrate cartridges and disposable pens like the ones in the LOCAL’d shop).

These relatively new and exciting devices have permeated the cannabis concentrate market over the last few years, quickly becoming a go-to concentrate-based product for both the novice and accustomed cannabis fans.

The vape pens that are gifted with a Local’d purchase of 8 Miles Mac N Cheese have three components: the pen-like battery that comes with a USB charging piece (sold on the Add-On page), and a cartridge filled with cannabis concentrate that slides into the pen.

Why Choose a Pre-Filled Oil Vape Cartridge?

Even if you’re new to using pre-filled oil vape cartridges, it’s clear to see that one of the best benefits to them is ease of use. Pre-filled “carts” require little to no effort whatsoever.

At most, these products require you to make sure the battery is pre-charged and press a button to inhale. In fact, sometimes you don’t even have to worry about the battery life—many products are designed so that charging the battery isn’t even necessary (like the disposable vape pens gifted with the Sweet Crimes carrot cake).

Both of these options mean no need to handle any of the tools or mess you usually would with any other delivery system. Just click and inhale. Boom! You’re high. Like, really realllyyyyyy high.

Another reason to try the cartridges is Portability.
Pre-filled oil vape carts are the easiest method of enjoying oil while on the go. Their sleek and minimalist design allows for discreet vaping, free from the buzz-killing qualities that noticeable smoke and odor cause.

Personally, I enjoy the taste of flower much more, and there is something so relaxing about the ritual of grinding up a bowl, packing it, and enjoying it slowly. But obviously, this isn’t always the ideal set up. A vape pen with an oil concentrate is great for when I need to keep my buzz on the down low.

What is the main difference between vaping a concentrated form of cannabis as opposed to vaping or smoking flower?

The main difference is the type of high you get from using concentrates vs flower.

All cartridges are filled with concentrated cannabis, which means the producer has taken the marijuana flower and processed it into a sticky substance that will usually test above 60 percent THC. Put simply, one puff of a vape pen delivers a higher concentration level of THC than one puff of a flower from a joint. So if you’re new to the vape pen, don’t try to be a hero and create thick clouds of vapor right away. You might feel like you need to take more puffs because the onset of your high may seem slightly more delayed with a vape pen, but I've noticed that the effects also tend to creep up and can pack a fucking punch.

I’ll be honest. I’m a repeat offender of accidentally taking too many hits from my vape pen and then all of the sudden feeling way too high. It’s actually the main reason why this article was published on a Friday instead of the typical Thursday.

Once, my vape pen made me so high that I started legitimately panicking; I called my brother to tell him I thought I was going to be the first person on the planet to die from THC. I repeatedly asked him to report my death to the scientific community, so that others would know the danger of marijuana overdose. I also requested he Uber Eats me my last meal.

If you’re someone who happens to get paranoid easily, you may want to stay away from oils or concentrates, or make sure that you don’t take drags the same way you would off of a joint or large glass pipe.

The term 'low and slow' is the best advice I could give a new user; meaning take a small puff and wait at least two-three minutes. I know you’re used to taking a few hits from your pipe, but hold your horses, dude. Take some time between hits, and see how you feel before taking in more. Most importantly, only you know your best dosage; the only real way to know what works for you is trial and error.

Another difference in concentrates and flowers is that the high with concentrates lasts longer (at least it does for me) so vaping is what I do when I’m trying to save money.

Are there any downsides to using the cartridges?

The downside to using a vape pen is that it is more likely to affect you the way alcohol typically; in a sneaky and unpredictable way.

I don’t exclusively use vape pens. In fact, I often take long breaks from using them because I’ve noticed that they raise my tolerance higher than I’d like if I puff too regularly. Because they are so portable and convenient, I often find myself taking several hits throughout the day that I didn’t really need.

**Like any substance, cannabis should be used consciously. If you’re new to the 420 life, take it from me: pay attention to your consumption the same way you do with all other medications and/or recreational vices.

All cannabis products (recreational, and medicinal) should be consumed in a safe and comfortable place.**

How can I try this?
